The Monson PTSA is participating in a state-wide student art competition entitled “Reflections” and has asked the Monson Arts Council to provide judges to award the prizes. This is part of a national competition, with the Monson winners going on to a state contest, which in turn will send winners to the national competition. The theme for this year’s contest is “Show your Voice”.
The competition is divided into categories based on medium (dance, film, literature, music, photography and visual arts) and also into categories by age. The submissions from the Monson schools are primarily in the visual arts, and largely from Granite Valley Middle School art classes. The Monson award winners will be passed on to the state level by February 1st .
The MAC has agreed to provide three judges for the competition: Peter Barnett, David Dupuis and Jessica Lister. They were able to review the work submitted by the 4-6 grade students at the Granite Valley School, along with their written statements about their work and its relation to the theme. Works were judged for adherence to the theme, creativity, and technical skill, with each judge assigning scores to the works in each of the categories. Two of our favorites are shown above.
In addition to the middle school submissions, there was a single submission from the high school, entitled “The Best Medicine”, which interpreted the theme as using her voice to spread cheer among her friends through humor. This was developed from a photograph using the “Procreate” software. It will automatically advance as the representative of that age group.
