I am an artist currently living in Suffield, CT, having a studio at the Indian Orchard Mills in Springfield, MA since 2009. My BFA was received from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and my MFA from the College of Art & Architecture at Clemson University.
A working artist since 1972, I have painted for many years in acrylics, worked with mixed media, and also encaustic, using natural found materials. My artwork has been exhibited and collected in the Southeast, Northeast, the West Coast and Canada. I have many years of teaching art courses in various educational settings in North Carolina, South Carolina, Montreal, Maine and Massachusetts. Also, I have facilitated numerous workshops designed to help people find a way to create art simply from their heart. Since 2006 I was the Gallery Curator of the Art Gallery at Western New England University, also having taught various studio art courses at WNE as an Adjunct Lecturer from 2005-2013. I retired from my gallery responsibilities at WNE in 2020. I continue to exhibit my artwork as often as possible.
Stephen Saxenian’s sculptural practice is driven by a commitment to gesture, form and storytelling. His love for working clay by hand, initially as a ceramic artist, combined with interests in the natural world and drawing, led him to representational and humanist sculpture. Inspired by both classical technique and lived experience, his work, often exploring memory, struggle, and resilience, conveys the dignity and grace of his subjects.
An elected and award-winning member of the National Sculpture Society, Saxenian has an
extensive exhibition record and his work is held in private collections and at the New Salem
Museum and Academy of Fine Art. His recent monumental sculpture, a life-size mustang, is
installed at the McLean School in Potomac, Maryland. He lives and works from his home studio
in western Massachusetts and teaches sculpture and drawing in the New England area
