Theatre Stage Manager’s Role

Stage Managers facilitate communication across all creative and technical departments. They act as a right hand to the director and are responsible for ensuring that productions run smoothly and to schedule. They organize all practical and technical aspects of rehearsals and productions to ensure that performers and crew are in the right place at the right time.

The Stage Manager shall:

  • Participate in auditions 
  • Schedule and run rehearsals with the director
  • Take staging notes during rehearsals
  • Herd cats, actors, parents, technicians… whatever needs to be herded
  • Work with Technical Leads to determine needs and specifics for:
    • Sets
    • Props
    • Lighting
    • Sound
  • Manage stage crew
  • Prepare set change list/board
  • Call all technical cues during performances
  • Coordinate with House Manager to start the show at open and intermissions
  • Oversee the entire show each time it is performed

Depending on the production, this role may have a stipend.
